How to Improve Your PTE Listening Score: A Task-by-Task Practice Plan

Improve your PTE Listening score by separating hearing, spelling, note and selection errors.

3 min read

Improve listening by separating comprehension from task execution. You may understand the recording but miss spelling, select an extra option or lose your place in a transcript. Each failure needs a different drill.

Check your exam’s task set

Academic Listening currently has eight task types, including Highlight Correct Summary. Core has seven and does not list that task. Both include spoken summary, multiple answers, fill in the blanks, single answer, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words and dictation. Diagnose by task

  • Summaries: main idea missing, notes too detailed or word range wrong
  • Highlight Correct Summary (Academic only): detail-matching replaces the recording's main claim
  • Multiple answers: keyword matching or unnecessary selections
  • Multiple Choice, Single Answer: question target missed or a plausible distractor chosen without checking the recording's full meaning
  • Fill in the blanks: sound captured but spelling or ending wrong
  • Select Missing Word: local grammar noticed but argument missed
  • Highlight Incorrect Words: transcript tracking lost
  • Dictation: phrase order, small words or spelling lost

For Highlight Correct Summary, write the main claim in five to eight words after one playback, then explain how each rejected option changes emphasis or scope. For Multiple Choice, Single Answer, identify the question target before playback, compare every option with the recording's meaning and state why each distractor fails.

A 10-day plan

Day 1: complete a small mixed set and classify every error. Days 2 and 3: practise the weakest task slowly. Day 4: transcribe one short recording and compare exact forms. Day 5: practise main-idea notes.

Days 6 and 7: target the second weakness. Day 8: mix selection tasks and explain every answer. Day 9: complete a longer session under realistic conditions. Day 10: compare errors with day 1 and keep only strategies that transferred to new recordings.

Original micro-drill

Keep this script hidden. Ask a partner or text-to-speech tool to play it once: “The exhibition was extended because weekend tickets sold quickly, although weekday attendance remained modest.” Reveal the transcript and model notes only during review.

Write three notes: extended, weekend sales strong, weekday modest. The relationship matters: strong weekend demand caused the extension, but attendance was uneven. If your notes contain only tickets and attendance, practise marking cause and contrast.

Use PTE Listening Fill in the Blanks for exact words and PTE Highlight Correct Summary for main meaning. Continue in listening practice.

Separate hearing from answer construction

After a wrong item, listen again only during review. First write what you heard. Then compare it with the transcript. If the sound was missed, train sound discrimination. If it was heard but typed incorrectly, train spelling or grammar. If notes were accurate but the option was wrong, train meaning and selection.

These causes need different drills. A generic “listen more” session hides the distinction.
