PTE to IELTS Score Converter

Pick your PTE Academic overall or skill score and this converter shows the IELTS Academic band Pearson's own concordance study aligns it with. The table below comes from Pearson's July 2025 study, built from more than 1,500 test takers who sat both tests, and it treats the overall score and each of the four skills as separate comparisons rather than one shared scale.

What this table actually shows

Pearson's July 2025 concordance study compares score distributions between the enhanced PTE Academic and IELTS Academic. It reports a PTE range for each IELTS Academic half-band from 4.5 to 9.0, separately for the overall score and for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.

This is a concordance, not a conversion formula. It describes how two groups of test takers scored on both tests, so a PTE score inside a given range is associated with, not certified as equal to, the matching IELTS band.

Why the overall and per-skill columns differ

The overall PTE range for a given IELTS band does not match any single skill's range for that same band. For example, from IELTS 6.0 upward the Speaking ranges sit well above the overall range (IELTS 7.0: Speaking 76-82 against overall 63-70), while at IELTS 4.5 and 5.0 they start lower.

Because of this, converting a single overall PTE number into an IELTS overall band tells you nothing reliable about your per-skill IELTS equivalents. Use the per-skill table whenever a requirement names individual skill minimums, and the overall table only when a requirement names an overall band.

How to use the converter

Select whether you want the overall reading or a specific skill, then enter your PTE score. The tool finds the row whose range contains your score and shows the matching IELTS Academic band, with the full table highlighted below so you can see the neighbouring rows.

If your score sits below the lowest published range for that column, the tool says no IELTS equivalent is published rather than guessing; Pearson's table starts at IELTS 4.5.

  • Choose overall, Listening, Reading, Speaking or Writing
  • Enter your PTE score
  • Read the matched IELTS Academic band from the table
  • Check the neighbouring rows if your score sits near a boundary

What this concordance does not cover

Pearson's July 2025 study covers PTE Academic against IELTS Academic only. It is not built for PTE Core, and it does not apply to IELTS General Training.

This table also is not a substitute for a requirement that already names its own PTE cut score. Many universities, employers and government bodies publish separate PTE thresholds instead of converting from an IELTS requirement themselves; where that is the case, use their published PTE number directly.

After you have your IELTS equivalent

If you are choosing between the two tests, compare the IELTS band this converter shows you against the PTE score you are already working towards, rather than treating the two numbers as interchangeable in every context.

For Canadian immigration programmes specifically, use the PTE Core to CLB calculator instead of this converter, since IRCC benchmarks PTE Core against the Canadian Language Benchmark, not against IELTS.
