There is no single "PTE score for Australian PR". Australian visa rules use different English categories, eligibility rules and points rules. First identify your visa subclass and the rule applying to your circumstances. Then match the date you took PTE Academic to the correct official table.
This guide explains the Department of Home Affairs category tables. It is general information, not migration advice.
Start with the test date
For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs uses different PTE Academic minimums for each component. The old shorthand of 50 each, 65 each and 79 each belongs to tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 and may remain usable only where the relevant visa and transition rule allow it. Select the correct date table first, then check Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking individually. These English categories do not by themselves establish visa eligibility or an invitation outcome.
PTE Academic component scores
For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, Home Affairs publishes different minimums for each component:
| English category | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Competent | 47 | 48 | 51 | 54 |
| Proficient | 58 | 59 | 69 | 76 |
| Superior | 69 | 70 | 85 | 88 |
These are component requirements. Do not replace them with an overall score or an average. The values come from the current Home Affairs pages for competent English, proficient English and superior English.
For tests taken on or before 6 August 2025, the PTE Academic thresholds were 50 in each component for competent English, 65 in each component for proficient English, and 79 in each component for superior English. Home Affairs says such results may be usable until 6 August 2028, depending on the visa. The relevant visa page and validity rule still control.
Category does not automatically mean eligibility
Competent English can be an eligibility requirement in one pathway. Proficient or superior English can affect a points claim in a points-tested pathway. Check the current Home Affairs points calculator and the exact subclass rules rather than importing a points value into another visa. Meeting a language category does not establish that you qualify for a visa, will receive an invitation, or have enough total points.
Home Affairs also recognises passport evidence for competent English in stated circumstances. Other visas may have their own evidence rules, exemptions, test-age windows or higher requirements. Completely online, remote-proctored English tests are not accepted for Australian visa purposes on the category pages.
A safe verification sequence
Use this order before booking or relying on a result:
- Find the official page for the exact visa subclass and stream.
- Decide whether you are checking eligibility, a points claim, or both.
- Open the linked English category page or legislative instrument.
- Select the table by test date: before 7 August 2025, or on/after that date.
- Check all four PTE Academic components individually.
- Check how recent the result must be on the date of application or invitation.
- Recheck immediately before you act, because rules can change.
Worked example: Priya checks without guessing
Priya is a fictional candidate researching a points-tested skilled visa. Her PTE Academic test was taken on 20 August 2025. Her report shows Listening 72, Reading 74, Writing 84 and Speaking 89.
She does not search for a single conversion such as "PTE 79 equals superior". She opens the official page for her subclass, confirms which English categories are relevant to eligibility and points, then uses the post-7 August 2025 table. She compares each component with the relevant row.
This sequence reveals a fact without making an immigration conclusion: if she is checking the published superior-English row, Writing 84 is below that row's 85 minimum even though the other three components exceed their listed minimums. She must then verify what that means for her own application through the subclass rules or a registered migration professional. She should not substitute her overall score or average the components.
Before you set a practice target
Write the official requirement as four labelled component targets. Keep the source URL, test-date category and date checked next to them. This prevents an old "50/65/79 in each" chart from being applied to a newer test.
Once your official target is confirmed, choose the weakest relevant skill in the PTE practice question hub and build practice around that component.
