PTE Requirements for Australian Universities: Course Check Guide

Check whether an Australian course accepts PTE Academic and record its overall, skill, validity and pathway requirements before booking.

4 min read

Australian universities set English requirements by course and intake. Check the official course page and admissions policy for PTE Academic, then record both the overall minimum and every skill minimum. A university-wide summary may not cover a regulated or competitive program.

There is no single Australian university PTE score

Admission requirements are set at course level. The same university may publish one score for most undergraduate programs, a higher result for postgraduate study, and separate component minimums for teaching, law or health courses. Record five fields from the official course page or offer: test name, overall score, each skill minimum, result-age rule and whether a pathway or packaged English course applies. Use the most restrictive requirement when comparing offers.

Check the course, not only the institution

Pearson says PTE is accepted by Australian universities, but acceptance does not create one national entry score. Requirements may differ for undergraduate, postgraduate, teaching, nursing or pathway courses.

Use this order:

  1. Open the exact course page for your intake.
  2. Find its English language requirements.
  3. Confirm that it names PTE Academic.
  4. Record overall and component minimums.
  5. Check how recent the result must be.
  6. Check whether packaged English or another pathway is available.
  7. Save the page and date you checked it.

If the course page and a general admissions page disagree, ask admissions which rule controls and keep the written reply.

Overall and skill scores answer different questions

A course may require an overall score plus no skill below a stated level. Meeting only the overall number is insufficient in that case. PTE's overall score is not the arithmetic mean of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.

Professional registration after graduation may also have a separate English standard. Admission to a nursing degree, for example, is not itself proof that a future Ahpra registration requirement is met.

Worked example: build a requirement card

Fictional candidate Theo is comparing two Master of Teaching programs. University A's course page lists an overall PTE Academic requirement and higher Speaking and Writing minimums. University B links to a faculty policy with a different profile.

Theo creates one card per course:

  • course and intake
  • accepted test: PTE Academic
  • overall minimum
  • Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing minimums
  • latest acceptable test date
  • policy URL and date checked

For a fictional comparison, University B requires overall 65 and at least 60 in every skill. Theo has overall 68, Listening 66, Reading 67, Writing 64 and Speaking 58. He meets the overall target but misses the Speaking minimum. He does not average the skills or use Pearson's general study guidance as a substitute. He asks University B about its pathway options and prepares the weak skill.

Before booking or sharing

Confirm the application deadline and allow for score processing. Pearson says PTE Academic results are usually available within two days but can take up to five working days. The university may need additional time to verify the digital report.

When the score is ready, follow the university's instructions for sharing it from myPTE. A screenshot may help you keep records, but the institution verifies the result through Pearson's secure system.

Use the PTE score validity guide to compare Pearson's period with the university's rule. Then practise the relevant gap in the PTE practice question hub.
