Environment & Resources

Environmental vocabulary is useful across many reading and discussion topics. Learn the relationships between the words without treating a familiar phrase as evidence for a claim.

Understand the pattern

Conserve resources means use them carefully to avoid waste; consume resources means use them. Reduce waste concerns producing less unwanted material, while recycle waste describes processing material for another use. These activities can be related, but one is not an exact synonym for the others.

Distinguish totals from rates and efficiency. A machine may use less energy for each unit it produces while total energy consumption increases because production grows. If a passage gives only the efficiency figure, you cannot infer the overall total. Accurate language depends on the measurement, not just the topic.

Avoid absolute claims that the source does not support. A cleaner alternative does not necessarily have no environmental impact. Describe the specific change, comparison and conditions in the passage. These lessons practise English expressions, not scientific evaluations of particular technologies or policy recommendations.

Language in context

Word or patternMeaning or useExample
conserve resourcesUse resources carefullyThe workshop introduced measures to conserve resources.
reduce wasteProduce less unwanted materialReusable containers can help reduce packaging waste.
energy consumptionThe amount of energy usedThe chart compares household energy consumption.
public transportShared passenger services available to the publicThe plan aims to improve access to public transport.

Worked example

Reason through the choice

A factory uses less electricity per item but makes twice as many items. Can you conclude that its total electricity consumption fell?

Answer: No. You need the size of the per-item reduction and the total output.

Per-item efficiency and total consumption are different measures. A precise summary could state that electricity use per item fell while output increased, without inventing the total.

Try it yourself

Write your answers before opening the key. For open responses, the suggested answer is one possible version; keep the meaning and check the target pattern.

  1. Choose the verb meaning use carefully to avoid waste: conserve / consume resources.
  2. Rewrite The organisation wants to produce less rubbish using reduce waste.
  3. A source says a vehicle has lower emissions than another model. Is zero emissions an accurate paraphrase?
Check answers and explanations

1. Conserve. Consume means use up or use; conserve focuses on protecting or avoiding waste.

2. The organisation aims to reduce waste. Aims to preserves the intention; it does not claim the reduction has already occurred.

3. No. Lower is comparative and does not mean none. Keep the reference comparison.

Use it in your PTE preparation

PTE Academic

For passages or charts on energy and transport, retain the unit and comparison: per household, per journey or overall. Use topic vocabulary to describe the evidence rather than to supply an unsupported explanation for a trend.

PTE Core

In community or workplace messages, make the practical action explicit: use the recycling bins, reduce printing or report a water leak. Explain the relevant location or procedure rather than relying on a broad environmental slogan.

Recall and transfer

Describe one action that reduces waste and one that recycles existing waste. Then write a sentence comparing energy use, including the unit. Check that your sentence does not confuse a total with a rate.
