Spelling & Confusable Words
Spelling practice works best when it targets your own errors. Combine the written form with meaning, grammar and a sentence you can reconstruct.
Understand the pattern
Separate a spelling error from a wrong-word error. Recieve is a misspelling of receive. Their instead of there is a different correctly spelled word in the wrong place. Spellcheck, if available outside a test, may not diagnose the second problem. Meaning and grammar remain part of your checking routine.
Keep a short error log with the correct word, the part you missed and a sentence. For necessary, you might note one c and two s letters. Cover the correct form, write the sentence from memory, then compare it letter by letter. Copying a visible word several times can hide a retrieval problem.
Learn plurals and inflections with the base: analysis becomes analyses, while evidence is normally uncountable in this use. Do not rely on a spelling slogan as an exception-free rule. When two standard spelling varieties exist, choose the variety you can use consistently in your own practice rather than switching randomly within a response.
Language in context
| Word or pattern | Meaning or use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| receive | Notice the order of e and i | Did you receive the revised schedule? |
| necessary | One c, two s letters | A signature is necessary. |
| their / there / they're | Possession / place or existence / they are | Their books are there, and they're ready. |
| analysis / analyses | Singular / plural | The two analyses reached similar conclusions. |
Worked example
Reason through the choice
Correct: Their are two necessarys changes in the report.
Answer: There are two necessary changes in the report.
There are introduces the existence of the changes. Necessary is an adjective and does not take a plural ending here. The noun changes already expresses the plural. Fixing letters alone would miss the grammar problem.
Try it yourself
Write your answers before opening the key. For open responses, the suggested answer is one possible version; keep the meaning and check the target pattern.
- Write the correct form: Please confirm that you recieved the message.
- Complete: ___ office is closed, but ___ reopening tomorrow. (their / there / they're)
- Make analysis plural in We compared two independent ___.
Check answers and explanations
1. Please confirm that you received the message. The base is receive; the past form adds d.
2. Their; they're. The first shows possession; the second expands to they are.
3. Analyses. This noun changes its ending rather than simply adding s.
Use it in your PTE preparation
PTE Academic
After a summary or dictation exercise, group errors into spelling, missing endings and wrong words. Practise the smallest group that explains the mistake. A correct idea can still be written with the wrong plural or a confusing homophone.
PTE Core
Check practical details such as addresses, dates and names against the prompt rather than guessing. For reusable vocabulary, build a personal list including appointment, available, necessary and the words you have actually misspelled.
Recall and transfer
Choose five words from your own error log. Write one sentence containing two of them, cover it, then reconstruct it later. Check both the target words and the small grammatical words around them. Retire items only when you can retrieve them reliably.
