Can You Take PTE at Home in 2026? Availability and Acceptance

Check current PTE Academic and Core delivery, and separate Pearson test availability from university, visa and regulator acceptance.

3 min read

No. Pearson's current public guidance says all PTE tests must be taken at an authorised test centre. PTE Academic and PTE Core are computer-based, but "computer-based" does not mean remotely proctored from home.

Current answer

Pearson currently directs PTE Academic and PTE Core candidates to test centres. Even if a remote product or third-party page appears in search results, availability and acceptance are different questions. For Australian visa evidence, Home Affairs requires approved tests to take place at a secure test centre and does not accept completely online or at-home delivery. For a university or professional regulator, check that body's own wording. A practice test taken at home is preparation, not an official PTE result.

Why old pages cause confusion

You may find references to PTE Academic Online in older search results or documents. Current Pearson test-selection and FAQ pages say PTE tests are taken at test centres, and the current PTE Academic page states that it is taken at an authorised centre on a computer.

Use the live booking flow as the availability check. If an old product page exists, that does not prove you can book it now or that a receiver will accept it.

Availability and acceptance are separate

Two questions must both have a satisfactory answer:

  1. Can Pearson currently book this test and delivery mode?
  2. Will the university, government or professional body accept it for your purpose?

A test can exist without being accepted for a particular application. Likewise, an authority may name a test but restrict the delivery mode. For example, Ahpra's current accepted-tests page specifies PTE Academic on a computer at a test centre for registration purposes.

Do not rely on a preparation provider's description, an old handbook or a friend's past booking. Check Pearson and the receiving authority on the same day.

Worked example: avoid a costly assumption

Fictional candidate Imani lives several hours from the nearest city. She finds an old PDF mentioning an online PTE option and plans to take the test from home for an Australian nursing registration application.

Imani checks Pearson's current booking route and Ahpra's accepted-tests page. Neither provides an at-home option for her purpose, and Ahpra specifies PTE Academic at a test centre. She therefore compares official centre appointments and travel before paying.

What you can do from home

You can prepare at home with task practice, a headset, a QWERTY keyboard and timed section sets. You can also create or manage a myPTE account online. The scored test itself still requires attendance at the booked centre.

When practising speaking, include some background speech at a low level so the test room feels less surprising. Keep the recording clear and review whether your answer is complete and easy to understand.

Use the official-centre search guide to compare locations. Once you know the trip, follow the test-day checklist and practise current tasks in the PTE practice question hub.
