Describe Image shows a chart, map, process diagram or photo that you describe aloud. Identify the visual, state its main message, support that message with two or three details, then close with an accurate overview — a flexible structure, not a script to force onto every image.

Answer time
40 seconds
PTE Core's Describe Image gives you fewer items than PTE Academic - three or four instead of five or six - but the same 25 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to speak. Core also scores Content out of 5 rather than 6 and labels the fluency trait simply "Fluency", small differences that change what a full Content score is worth.
What Describe Image is on PTE Core
Describe Image shows a chart, graph, map, process diagram or photograph. You get a short silent period to study it, then describe it aloud: what it shows, its main message, and enough detail to support that message.
PTE Core includes three to four Describe Image items, fewer than the five to six on PTE Academic.
Describe Image feeds your Speaking score only, and Content is judged first. That order shapes the whole task: before you think about sounding fluent, make sure what you say is an accurate account of the image in front of you.
Describe Image format and timing on PTE Core
The timing is identical to PTE Academic's Describe Image, so if you already have Academic practice material for this task, the preparation and speaking windows still apply.

How PTE Core scores Describe Image
Core scores Describe Image on Content, Pronunciation and Fluency. Content is scored first and out of 5 - one point lower than Academic's maximum of 6; if Content comes back at 0, Pronunciation and Fluency are not scored either, so an answer needs at least some accurate description of the image to earn anything.
Pronunciation and Fluency are each marked 0 to 5 against Pearson's usual proficiency bands, from Non-English or Disfluent up to Highly proficient.
Describe Image is a purely Speaking task in Core. Unlike Read Aloud (Reading and Speaking) or Repeat Sentence and Answer Short Question (Listening and Speaking), it does not feed any other skill, so treat it as focused Speaking practice.
How to approach a Describe Image item
Twenty-five seconds is enough to plan a shape for your answer, not to script it. This is the order we suggest working in.
Identify the type of visual in the first few seconds - bar chart, line graph, map, process or photo - since that decides your opening line.
State the single main message the image is making before listing any individual figures.
Add two or three supporting details that back up that main message, not every number visible.
Close with a one-sentence overview rather than trailing off after the last detail.
If the image shows change over time, mention the direction of the trend before individual figures.
A template for describing any image
A flexible four-part structure works for any Describe Image item: name the visual, state its main message, add two or three supporting details, then close with a short overview sentence. Adjust the wording to the visual type - a map needs location language, a process needs sequencing language, a bar chart needs comparison language - but keep the shape.
Opening: name the visual type shown
Main message: the single biggest pattern or point
Supporting detail 1
Supporting detail 2, and a third only if time allows
Closing overview: one sentence restating the main message
Worked example
Example (written by LexiPTE) - Describe Image prompt: a bar chart comparing weekly hours spent on four activities (work, study, exercise, sleep) for a sample group.
"This bar chart compares four weekly activities for a sample group. Sleep takes up the most time, at around fifty hours across the week, followed closely by work at roughly forty hours. Study and exercise are noticeably smaller, at under ten hours each. Overall, the chart shows that paid work and sleep dominate the group's week, leaving comparatively little time for study or exercise."
This answer names the chart type first, states the clear main message (sleep and work dominate), supports it with two figures, then closes with a one-sentence overview - the same four-part shape works for a map, a process diagram or a photo.
Strategies for Describe Image
Build a small bank of opening phrases for each visual type so you are not deciding wording and content at the same time.
Practise describing images you have never seen before, so your structure does not depend on familiar content.
After each practice attempt, check that your description would make sense to someone who has never seen the image, not just someone who already knows what it shows.
Time yourself: forty seconds is enough for one main message and two to three details, not an exhaustive list.
Practise a range of visual types in the same session so you are not caught out by an unfamiliar format on test day.
Common Describe Image mistakes on PTE Core
Most of these mistakes come from skipping the planning step, in our experience, rather than from weak English.
Listing every number on the chart instead of identifying its one main message.
Running out of things to say partway through the answer because no clear structure was chosen during the 25-second preparation window.
Describing the image type but never stating what it actually shows.
Speaking too quickly to fill the full forty seconds, which can affect Fluency even when Content is accurate.
A practice plan for Describe Image
Practise Describe Image with a mix of chart types - bar, line, pie, map, process and photo - since each needs slightly different vocabulary. After each attempt, check whether your answer named a clear main message within the first two sentences.
Three to four, fewer than PTE Academic's five to six, according to Pearson's PTE Core Score Guide.
No. Both exams give 25 seconds to prepare and 40 seconds to answer.
5, one point lower than PTE Academic's maximum of 6, per Pearson's Core Score Guide.
Your Content score is likely to suffer, because the description does not capture what the image shows. Content is scored first, and if it reaches 0, Pronunciation and Fluency are not scored either, so the response earns nothing.
No. Pearson's Core Score Guide labels it simply "Fluency".
No. Unlike several other PTE Core Speaking tasks, Describe Image is scored purely on Speaking.

Identify the type of visual and its single main message before your speaking time starts. Support that main message with two or three accurate details rather than listing everything visible. Close with a short overview sentence instead of trailing off mid-detail.
Listing every visible detail without identifying the image's actual main pattern. Reciting a memorised template that does not match the specific image shown.
