What is a PTE practice test, and how is it different from a full mock exam?

A PTE practice test trains one task type at a time. A full mock runs through Speaking and Writing, Reading, then Listening in one sitting of about two hours. Use the question bank to fix specific mistakes, then use a mock to check whether your timing and concentration hold across the whole exam.

If you keep losing words in Write from Dictation, do ten sentences and compare every answer with the transcript. Mark missing articles, plurals and verb endings. If you pause halfway through Read Aloud, record five passages and listen for the same hesitation each time. A full mock tells you which skill is weakest; repeating the right task is how you work on it. Do not spend another two hours on a mock before reviewing the mistakes from the last one.

The time limit depends on the task: Repeat Sentence gives you 15 seconds to speak; Write Email gives you 9 minutes; Summarize Written Text, 10 minutes; Write Essay, 20 minutes. Reading uses a shared section timer in the real exam, not a separate official limit for every question. See the PTE test format guide for the full timing breakdown, or open the mock exam page for a complete timed test.

Where should you start if you have never taken PTE?

Start with five Read Aloud passages, ten Write from Dictation sentences and five Reading fill-in-the-blanks questions. Add one Writing task: Write Essay for Academic or Write Email for Core. Attempt them before reading the model answers. You will have a concrete starting point: missed words, incorrect blanks, recording problems and a written response to review.

Use those first attempts to choose your next session. Match the mistake to the practice, instead of repeating the whole bank in order:

  • You understood the audio but lost words when typing. Compare your Write from Dictation answer word by word with the transcript. Count missing plurals, articles and verb endings. Practise ten more sentences in short meaning groups, then check whether the same errors return.
  • You finished comfortably. Take a full mock exam, then compare each skill with the PTE score requirements for your study or immigration goal. Start the next week with the skill that falls shortest.

The PTE test format guide shows the task order, question types and timers. Choose Academic or Core before using a template: the two exams do not have identical tasks or word limits.

What does a PTE practice question actually look like?

Here is an illustrative PTE Reading multiple-choice item. Read the passage before choosing an answer: “Public libraries now lend e-books and provide online research tools alongside printed collections. Yet their buildings remain busy with students, local groups and people who need a quiet place to work. These changes extend the library's role rather than replace it.”

Question. What is the main purpose of the passage?

  • a) To argue that printed books are no longer useful
  • b) To explain how libraries respond to changing needs ✓
  • c) To compare the prices of different digital services
  • d) To recommend closing public study spaces

The answer is (b). It captures the main idea without adding a claim the passage does not make.

Option (a) overstates the role of digital services: the passage does not say books are useless. Option (c) introduces prices, which are not discussed. Option (d) contradicts the continued use of physical spaces. The wrong answers may borrow a familiar word while changing the meaning. Read each option as a complete statement instead of matching one keyword.

This is the trap in PTE Reading: a familiar word does not make an option correct. Match the whole claim to the passage. For Reorder Paragraph, look for the sentence that introduces the topic before a sentence that refers to “this change” or “these services”. For fill-in-the-blanks questions, check the grammar and collocation as well as the meaning.

Try Reading multiple-choice practice and explain why each wrong option fails. If you keep selecting a keyword match instead of the correct meaning, use the guide to common PTE Reading mistakes before attempting the next set.

Which PTE practice questions are free, and what needs Pro?

The first question in each task type is free: 22 types for PTE Academic and 19 for PTE Core. That includes Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. You can work through the prompt and review the answer or feedback before unlocking the remaining questions and full mock exams with Pro.

You see the access level before starting a question. Here is what is included:

Use the free Writing task as a complete attempt. Set aside 20 minutes for an Academic essay or 9 minutes for a Core email. Write your answer before opening the sample, then compare the structure, coverage of the prompt and word choice. For Speaking, listen to your recording alongside the AI feedback and identify one correction to apply in the next attempt.

Start with the free questions to find your weakest task. Move to the full bank when you need more examples of that task, or use full mock exams to test all four skills together.

How many PTE practice questions do you need before test day?

Twenty questions you review carefully are more useful than two hundred you rush through. Start with one focused task type per day and reserve ten minutes to review it. The target is fewer repeated mistakes, not a larger completed-question count.

Keep a short error log: question type, what went wrong, and the correction. “Missed -s in two dictated plurals” is actionable; “careless” is not. For your next session, do ten new Write from Dictation items and check plurals explicitly. For Speaking, compare a new recording with the previous one. For Writing, rewrite the sentence that lost clarity before starting another full response.

If the exam is within a week, use the to prioritise recurring mistakes and timed attempts. If you have a month, follow the and take a full mock at the start and end of each week. Review the early so that you do not spend weeks repeating the same habit.

How do you practise PTE Writing and Speaking without a teacher?

Submit a recording or written answer, then review the AI score breakdown and a sample response. For Read Aloud, check content, pronunciation and oral fluency separately. A fluent recording can still omit words; an accurate recording can still have long pauses. Identify the issue before repeating the task.

Writing has explicit limits. In Academic, Summarize Written Text requires one sentence of 5–75 words in 10 minutes, and Write Essay requires 200–300 words in 20 minutes. In Core, Summarize Written Text uses 25–50 words in 10 minutes. Write Email gives you 9 minutes; Pearson's task instructions ask for 80–120 words. Practise those formats instead of carrying an essay template into an email task.

After each attempt, compare your response with the model. Did you answer every part of the prompt? Is the main point clear? Did you change the meaning when summarising? For Speaking, replay the exact phrase flagged by the feedback, record it again, then try a fresh question. The useful result is a correction you can repeat under the timer, not just a score to look at.

Before your next attempt, use the Academic summary template, Write Essay template, Core email template or Speaking task templates for that question type. Keep the structure, but supply your own content from the prompt. In Describe Image, for example, name the subject, give the main trend and support it with specific details from the image.

Are free PTE practice test PDFs worth using?

A PDF helps you learn the format and review sample questions. It cannot check your pronunciation, play a recording once, or make you finish a spoken response before the microphone closes.

PTE is computer-based. Practise typing your Writing responses, speaking into a microphone and listening without replaying the audio during the attempt. Plan and take notes the way you will on test day (on the erasable whiteboard provided, not paper), then return to the on-screen question. Someone who understands the passage can still lose time navigating the interface or rewriting an answer after the timer has run down.

For official examples, start with Pearson's Academic preparation resources or Core preparation resources. Then use online Reading practice, Listening practice and recorded Speaking attempts to train the conditions that a PDF cannot reproduce. Use the free examples to learn the task, then build speed through timed practice.

What PTE score do you need for study or immigration?

PTE scores run from 10 to 90. These are useful targets for the most common routes. In the table, L = Listening, R = Reading, W = Writing and S = Speaking.

Study abroadCheck your course’s overall and individual skill requirementsOfficial requirements ↗
Australia: Superior EnglishMinimum L69 / R70 / W85 / S88Official requirements ↗
Canada: at least CLB 9Minimum L82 / R78 / W88 / S84Official requirements ↗

The Australian thresholds above apply to PTE Academic tests taken on or after 7 August 2025. The older “79 in every skill” rule is not the current Superior English threshold: Writing now needs 85 and Speaking 88. Our explains the test-date rules and each English level.

For Canada, the table shows the minimum PTE Core score for at least CLB 7 or CLB 9 in each skill. For example, L82 / R78 / W88 / S84 reaches CLB 9; an overall 79 does not establish CLB 9. Use the to compare all four results. Pearson's study ranges are typical entry ranges, while individual courses can set higher overall and skill minimums.

Ready to measure the gap? Take a full PTE mock, write your four skill scores beside your target, and start with the biggest shortfall. Then return to the relevant task type in the question bank and review each answer before moving on.
